Trojan Seahorse is our flagship DDH Double New England IPA. We brew Seahorse with tasty Citra & Mosaic hops, then we dry hop it 2X with even more citra, and Galaxy hops as well!

Trojan Seahorse pours a hazy bright orange with a silky smooth, full body and a pillowy white head. The aroma bursts with notes of grapefruit, peach & passion fruit. Seahorse erupts with tropical flavors of papaya, lychee, melon and some more citrus, and has a soft, juicy, deceptively light finish.

Smells juicy and looks juicy. Very hazy orange-gold pour with a nose that brings out both citrus and tropical breezes. There's a silky mouthfeel like many New England style IPAs. Flavor blend, while not terribly complex, is consistent through the glass--grapefruit, peach, melon, and mango. Nice effort from the North Jersey Brewery with South Jersey beach aspirations.

Coastal Brew Works "Trojan Seahorse"
16 fl. oz. can "CANNED ON 5/18/22" and sampled on 9/05/22
$6.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a "DDH DOUBLE NEW ENGLAND STYLE INDIA PALE ALE" at 8.5% ABV with Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy hops. It's poured a cloudy, even murky golden orange body beneath a finger's width of white foam with a rocky cap to it. The aroma is bold and bright with citrus, hop resins, berries, grapefruit, passionfruit, and peach. Very nice! On to the taste... it's fuller, of course, but basically follows the aroma. Let me check to see that everything I've found in the aroma is there... yep, with a lot more passionfruit and less grapefruit and peach. What else is there? A little bit of lime, some melon, gooseberry, not so ripe lychee, pine, and earth. There's a little bit of spiciness there as well but I think that might be coming from alcohol. The malt is basic and most likely includes 2-row, wheat, and oats. It's interesting that as I go through this different flavors seem to come forward more than others, and almost with each sip. I was getting a lot of passionfruit but then I got more gooseberry. I got a lot of lychee and then I got lime, and so on. the bitterness is median for an IPA... but wait, this is a double NEIPA... ? I don't know, it's somewhere in the 40 to 50 IBU range. There's some acidic "hop burn" to it, some alcohol of course, and combined with the bitterness that equals a dry, earthy, resionus, and lightly piney finish. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. The head has held up well and it's left some very nice lacing about the glass. It's a solidly aromatic and flavorful beer that in many ways takes no prisoners despite its "New England Style" moniker. I don't know how repeatably drinkable this is because it's just so intense on the senses but the first one at least is fantastic. In a way I wish it was slightly more refined and polished but at the same time I feel that the rough edges are really what makes it so bright and full of character. Nicely done!

First rating and review. Can dated 5/18/2022. Poured into a pint glass. It pours an opaque, bright yellow-orange with more than a half finger of creamy bright white head and soapy lacing. The nose is big and fruity with lemon, lime, pineapple, tangerine, ripe honeydew, and tropical notes. Even at 2 months in the can it's a big and inviting aroma. The taste is similarly fruity with notes of ripe melon, peach, lychee, stone fruit, lemon, lime, and grapefruit. There are also hints of bubblegum, pine, and herbal spice. The tried and true combination of Citra and Mosaic hops work well. There is moderate, clean hop bitterness throughout. This ale has a nice thick, creamy mouth feel with pleasant carbonation, and the 8.5% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, Trojan Seahorse is an excellent offering from a new brewer without a regular base of operations. The brewers are off to a fine start.
