16-ounce pour enjoyed in a Becher glass at Brujos Brewing, Portland, OR.
Look:
Hostia certainly looks the part of a Czech-style pale lager, with its brilliant clear gold body capped with snowy white foam. The head shows excellent retention from the first sip to the last, and coats the glass with lavish lacing.
Smell:
The nose is pretty subdued. It leads with some floral hops, with an undertow of clean, crackery malt.
Taste:
The taste displays floral/grassy hops out front with delicate bready flavors of malt in a suporting role. As the beer warms, the hops turn herbal and a little lemony, and the malt takes on a pinch of sweetness. But the beer remains mostly dry through the finish, without much malt character.
Feel:
The body is rather thin, with brisk carbonation. Finishes clean and soft.
Overall:
The beer menu at the Brujos taproom identifies Hostia as a Czech pilsner. If that's what they're aiming for, it could really use more malt depth in the nose and taste, and a bit more body. But the appearance and pristine cleanliness show that Brujos is working in the right direction. The bartender mentioned that they're working on a Helles lager next, and I look forward to trying it.
