IPL is a dark copper color with an average-sized, off-white head. Retention is just alright. Aroma is of generic bitter hop with an underlying malt sweetness. Taste is a marriage of IPA flavor and mouthfeel of a lager. Hop flavor is a mix of mild citris and pine with a moderate bitterness. An underlying caramel malt body provides balance and really comes out in the finish. Overall, this beer suffers a little bit from a watery "lager effect". Also, this seems nothing at all like a dopplebock, and fits closer to being categorized as an IPA.

Appearance - Sampled in a flight of four beers. "Kill Bill IPL" has a reasonable head and a clear copper color.
Smell - I pick up a good does of hops in the nose, and not much else. This is a bad thing for a doppelbock, but good for this beer.
Taste - As far as bitterness goes, this beer is just like an American IPA. Bitterness is the centerpiece, but the taste is a little cleaner than most ales.
Mouthfeel - The body is a little light, which would be all right for some lagers. The characteristics of the beer make for a pleasing drinking experience.
Drinkability - This is pretty good stuff. The drinking experience is comparable to the average American IPA, but some intnagible quality is missing.
Comments - This beer combines some of the best qualities of IPAs and golden lagers. To call this beer a doppelbock is a mistake. It really bears more resemblance to an IPA, but IPA is not correct either. Definitely worth a try, but a little difficult to rate because it defies easy classification.

Pours a nice deep amber with a teeny, creamy, dense head that dwindles to a very lasting lace.
Very deep and rich smell - earthy, malty, heady and heavy!
And it tastes... Well... I mean, sure it's a lager, but it doesn't really taste like one, you know? So, what does it taste like? To my tastebuds... I'd say that it was a cross between an ESB and a barleywine. And you might as well make it an English ESB - you know, with a nice butterscotch flavor to it? But very rich and full bodied and full flavored. It's kind of funny that they say that it has 115 IBUs 'cause I didn't really notice the bitterness that much. Sure, it's there - but like in a nice barleywine - the bitterness is very smooth and even and it is nicely balanced by the lightly sweet maltiness of it. A very enjoyable drink!
