my first from these guys, solid and drinkable without being amazing, the lighter side of marzen in terms of abv, but still all the color and body i want from the style and definitely not in that newly popular festbier range, this is still classic. real deep orange color to it, less than an inch of white head but nice permanence and lace, airy, and then just a little less than full clarity on it, still good looking beer. nose is understated, fresh enough, familiar german lager yeast but subtle also, some baked character to the grain but not sugary, seems well made, simple in a good way, and balanced with just a little fresh noble hop pep at the end, more of that as this warms, but the flavor is real similar, a little more yeast forward in the taste to me, bready there, proofing and more raw, but still with the toasted richness of the grain, some toffee, a coziness about it with a bit of body, dried on the back end but some lingering malt character to me, the bready yeast, and just a bit of bitterness. pretty well refined although without the old world german precision the best of these have, but i like the hops and the yeast together on the swallow, and found this plenty drinkable, doesnt get any heavier or anything as it collects in the belly. good, very good even, nice to finally get to drink some beers from these guys! a fine take on the style here.
