3,760 beers reviewed on here and this was the first Czech Dark Lager that I've come across.
Where has this style been?!?!???
Sure, it's not popular but this was enjoyable as I found it up at Gary's in Wayne a few months back. Only had one other offering from Five Dimes before, as this was exactly what I expected it to be.
Dark brown with just a hint of garnet around the edges, this was topped off with a massive amount of soft, mocha head that never even came close to fully settling down. Well-defined rings of lacing were left behind as they easily covered a majority of my pint glass once I started to work my way through this. Loads of hazelnut and chestnut were in the nose with a bit of dark bread and fruit under those. The taste was more balanced with some cranberry, bready spice, and malt on the palate, as they combined with a lively carbonation that complemented the notes nicely. Just a bit cloying and plenty slick, this went down easily as it grew on me throughout my session.
"RB 12/23/24' was stamped on the bottom of the can but I had no idea if that was an enjoy by date or not. Regardless, this held up well as it felt like something I had on tap. Traces of sarsaparilla and licorice stuck around in the back, as I wish I had gotten another can. Nice take on the style that was easily accessible and well-crafted. Prosit!
