much more a brown ale than a conventional porter, served on nitro, cool to have this stuff available in idaho now. this is good but its not amazing, the coffee aspect is better than the beer quality, nice complexity to the beans, not over roasted, well incorporated into the brew, notes of cocoa and hazelnut and raisin and fig, both in aroma and flavor, a strong but not dominant flavor, no real acidity from the beans, and pretty low on the bitterness too. the base beer itself lacks the roast that makes the style, and with the lighter coffee roast character this seems to kind of be missing its low end, chocolate all through it and some compatible malt sweetness, but again more a brown ale than a classic porter, almost amber colored in the glass and not super well refined, like there is some haze to this despite the creamy nitro head, airy and tan, two inches high. there is some tang to this from the ferment to me not from the coffee, like it was run a bit warm or something, a little stressed, maybe underpitched, just not quite right, and the level of tidiness overall isnt great, which both contribute to this seeming a bit amateur overall despite the excellent coffee profile and the lovely nitrogenation and accompanying smoothness, both of which rule. that said, its fun beer, a little something different, but light even for a brown porter. hope to get into more of their beers around town!
