Presentation: Sampled at the Fermette des Pins in Buvrinnes after a Tour of the Brasserie Brootcoorens in Erquelinnes. Managed a sample from a shared 750ml bottle.
Brewed for Wanderpepen, which is referenced on the label, but there is no mention of Dupont anywhere else on the label. I know this to be brewed by Dupont for sure because they were bottling this brew during our Brasserie Dupont Brewery Visit a few days earlier. The green glass 750ml bottle comes with a colorful brown on yellow label which has the wording Viellé Des Estinnes. Listed at 7.5%, with a Best Before Date of 04/2007.
Appearance: Shimmering golden body with a light milky haze that seemed to clear when the glass was allowed to settle. Creamy white head with a fine bubbled texture to it. Lots of conditioning in this one and a fine overall presentation in the Moinette goblet.
Nose: Lots of pepper laden hops and Tripel like spices all set into a flamboyant floral like nose. Hard to miss this one, but close up it is a complex treat, I suspect the use of many spices in this one, if not the yeast really reveals all in and amongst the gorgeous hop laden nose.
Taste: Hoppy entrance with a little perfumed and floral character. This is soon bolstered by the malts and a tingling spicy middle. Herbal traits in the back end mix with black pepper and a fruity dimension. Seems much more complex than it should be, apples and pears play peek-a-boo. Finishes with a spicy dryness and plenty of those trademark Dupont hops.
Mouthfeel: Finely dissolved conditioning allows the hops, spices and the peppery yeast to dance on the tongue. Nice creamy texture mixes with the sharp prickly hops and black pepper. Full-bodied.
Drinkability: Damn it! After the sample I had I asked for a bottle to myself it was that good, but they had sold out, our party of 30 had wiped them out of supplies it seems. I was offered a Moinette Blonde but the Viellé Des Estinnes has an intensely quaffable dimension to it. Lighter, but not weak, and very easy to knock back. High end drinkability bordering on Dangerous.
Overall: Not much information on this one, but it is a true Contract-Brew that Dupont do for Wanderpepen on a regular basis. Reminded me of a more quaffable Moinette Blonde, the lower strength really adds a sessionable aspect to this rare brew. Worth seeking out, if you can find it. Very nice!!
