500 ml bottle
Pours opaque black, drak tan head is coarse and slowly dissipates to nothing.
Aroma of cocoa, coffee, oak, molasses, fig, and bourbon.
Flavor is oaky dry with minimal bourbon but some hints of vanilla and red wine tannins followed by some brown sugar and coffee bean. Bit of dark chocolate in the finish.
Full viscous body with little textural carbonation.
This is pretty interesting...its aged on bourbon barrels followed by cabernet barrels. I'm barely getting the bourbon and while the red wine manifests as a faint dark fruit flavor, the tannins really come through. They add a puckering bitterness to the finish that is distinctly not hops. My initial pour was overchilled but some of those other flavors you'd expect from this style come through as it warms to a more appropriate stout temperature. Overall, I am not sure I am crazy about this but I will say that it stands out from other big stouts for me. I'm going to remember it for a while because I can't honestly say I've had another stout that tastes specifically like this. I'm going to curve my grade slightly for originality and because objectively I think there is a lot of quality here even if it's not hitting my personal tastes exactly. I have another of these cellared and I'll be really excited to see what a couple years of age does for this.
