Opaque black color; dark chocolate brown while pouring. Poured a medium height, dark tan head that collapsed to a thick skiff after a few minutes. Too dark to see the carbonation level. Left small dots of lace.
Strong malt and mild coffee scents. Very light barnyard and yeast. Slightly sweet. Swirling the glass kicked up a stronger barnyard and a light mint. This faded away leaving a stronger malt and coffee smell with some green vegetable smell.
Medium-strong bitters that match the 50 IBU on the label. Coffee dominates the flavor with the malt coming in second. Just a bit sweet. Faint caramel after it warms up a bit. Very light alcohol flavor. The aftertaste is mostly bitter. It starts out with a bit of barnyard which is quickly replaced by coffee. This fades away leaving mild malt and a sharp bitter flavor.
Mild tongue tingling. Foams up into something that is close to creamy, but seems to pass by as it turns into larger bubbles. Heavy body. Slight astringency.
I was expecting more caramel flavor associated with bourbon, but I couldn't taste any until it got to a very narrow temperature range. I don't usually care for sweet beers, but this would have been better with more sugars and caramels to offset some of the bitters.
