16-ounce can purchased at Bridge & Tunnel taproom and bottle shop in Astoria, OR. Canned on 11/25/25. Enjoyed in a Bottle Logic snifter.

Look:
Dark, dark brown. So dark it's right next door to black. Burnt orange highlights. The thick head of tan foam quickly withdraws to an uneven ring and skin. The beer displays legs but no lacing.

Smell:
The nose opens with dark chocolate, toasted brown bread, malted milk balls, and bourbon. Notes of blackberries, raisins, vanilla, and roasted malt loiter around the edges.

Taste:
The flavor is full of dark chocolate and sweet bourbon up front. Notes of caramel and coffee follow, along with hints of licorice, oak, Oreos without the filling, toasted coconut, blackberries, and something floral which flits in and out. A little rye character peeks through as the beer warms. It's sweeter than I prefer, but not by that much, and the big roasted malt almost balances it out at the end. Finishes with dark chocolate, coffee, bourbon, a touch of char, and a pinch more licorice.

Feel:
Body feels thin (it's medium at best), but it has a fine, silky texture. Moderate carbonation.

Overall:
Uprise Brewing of Spokane, WA continues to impress. I already knew they were good at lagers and IPAs, and this is convincing evidence that they can make excellent barrel-aged stouts too. If they pull back the sweetness, beef up the body, and keep the bourbon and roast where they are, Phases of the Moon could be the ForeLand Cast Shadow replacement I've been looking for. As it is, I wish I'd bought a couple more cans at Bridge & Tunnel bottle shop up in Astoria, since Uprise beers aren't available in Portland yet. Great stuff. Would happily drink again.

Poured from a 16 ounce can dated 11-25-25 into a snifter at 57.9 degrees F.

Appearance- Black, opaque, slightly above average head retention, average lacing, medium brown creamy head, no alcohol legs on the glass wall, scant visible particulate at the edges.

Aroma- Whiskey, oak, cacao, roasted malt, between medium and high strength of scent.

Flavor- Whiskey, roasted malt, black pepper, oak, vanilla, slight cacao, high strength of flavor.

Mouthfeel- Between thin and medium body, slightly below average carbonation, highly mouth warming (builds with each sip), silky, moderately boozy, highly bitter, mildly mouth coating.

Overall- Black and opaque with slightly above average head retention and average lacing. The bouquet was a simple mix of whiskey, oak, cacao and roasted malt. The flavor followed the nose with some additional notes of black pepper and vanilla. The mouthfeel was nice, with the exception of the thin body, which was a major detractor. Overall, this was a solid beer but lacked complexity.
