Purchased at the source in September 2022 and drunk shortly after that, on Grand Final Day 2022. Go Cats!
Looks like a traditional English ale - a muddy, copper-brown hue with a dirty white head that has excellent staying power and leaves thick lacing down the glass. There is sediment in the can and, because I wasn't paying attention, in the bottom of my glass!
The nose is strongly earthy and malty, with some spicey alcohol. It's not alluring in relation to today's tropical fruit baskets, but it's very much to style.
The taste is also exactly as expected for the style. It's strongly malty, and the spicey alcoholic kick is definitely present, even in such a lower(ish) alcohol beer. Leaves a big, bitter aftertaste.
The mouthfeel is smooth. That spicey alcoholic sensation that I keep banging on about sticks in the mouth after the swallow, to the point of having a medicinal note.
Overall, this is pretty much on point for an English IPA, but there's nothing outstanding about it, hence mostly 4s rather than higher. If the mouthfeel was a little less medicinal at the back end and the spicey alcohol not so pervasive it would have scored higher.
Cheers!
