Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 3/27/23. The label says this beer "answers the question 'what might happen if an altbier was made in Bamberg?'".
Appearance: rich dark-amber hue with a bright ruby in the clear body when held up to the light. Head is a finger of frothy tan foam.
Smell: caramelly, nutty, biscuity, and with just the lightest wisp of smoke. It's nice, although there's a bit more biscuit than I usually care for.
Taste: caramelly malt with a moderate bitterness that has kind of a drying quality to the flavor. The smoke is lighter than a typical rauchbier, but definitely present; the Düsseldorf-meets-Bamberg description is pretty apt. I like it.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: I like this beer; it is growing on me. It has a more biscuity/drier character than I might normally like, but the smoke adds an interesting dimension that I appreciate.
