English-Style Rye Stout

Crow of Desperation is our English-Style rye stout brewed with pale English malt, flaked rye, crystal rye malt, caramelized oat malt and chocolate malt. We hopped Crow of Desperation with East Kent Goldings and open-fermented it with our house pub ale strain. Spunded for natural carbonation.

Lighter black opaque, poor with a brown head. Smells exactly as expected: rye, roasted malt, dark chocolate, with minor char, oat and earth. Taste is similar: with rye, roasted malt, cocoa, char flakes, a touch of oat, and a kiss of vanilla. Feel is dry and smooth in a medium-light yet full body, great roasty and rye accents. Nuanced and wonderfully balanced.

Pitch black. Big roasted malt aroma and flavor with a touch of rye spice. Good balance; definitely not sweet at all. Fairly light bodied with a dry roasty finish.

Phenomenal look; different colors of the pour (depending upon the light) -- dark purple, garnet, dark brown -- all clear; dark and opaque body in the glass; beautifully dense and creamy head, tan colored and long-lasting. Gorgeous nose; rich dark grains; mocha with a hint of rye spiciness. Rich and flavorful; cocoa and dark, bitter chocolate; grain char bitterness; semi-sweet. Heavy mouthfeel; dense and viscous; charred grain dryness.

This well-crafted rye stout hits on all cylinders. It brings a robust complexity and balance to the palate. I detected the rye primarily in the smell; but it likely added a nice, expansive element to the taste profile as well. Just a beautiful dark beer.

16oz can. No dating information found.
Dark brown colored body, with a mahogany brown back lit edge. Two fingers of tan head with the initial pour, and this head collapses with big bubbles to a partial cap and high climbing ring. Leaves behind a few short strings of lacing.
Aroma is immediately evident with smells of sweet roasted malts, cocoa, and a little ash and black licorice.
Taste continues from the nose with dark roasted and ashy malts, but with some long duration sweetness. Comes with fruity esters and a noticeable bit of bitterness. Mellow flavors of chocolate, oat malt, and a spicy kick of rye. Lower in ABV% but still presents a decent depth of flavor. Roasted chocolate malts in the aftertaste.
Medium mouthfeel, with minerality. A little chalky but still has a clean enough finish. Good carbonation.
Besides the chocolate, oats, and rye, the brew has some cola notes.

16oz can from Tavour. Black pour, one finger creamy beige head. Light roasty aroma with notes of chocolate. Taste amps up the roastiness, coffee, chocolate leading up to a bone dry finish. Bitterness lingers on the palate.
