Purchased at the Nelson Wines beer shop, South Wimbledon, SW London. Coming in a 500ml brown bottle, filtered(?--seen no yeast sediments). BBE SEP 06, served cool in a straight imperial-pint glass.
A: pours a nearly black colour with ruby glows; the tan beer head comes rocky and tightly foamy, very slowly settling down and leaving nice lacing all the way.
S: very rich, perfumy dark-chocolaty nose laced with vanilla hints, mildly sweet-nuttiness like honey-coated roast walnuts, rich treacles, sticky plum-jam, an alc. edge of sweet fortified wine, very light roastiness like coffee-milk in the background. Overall, the aroma is enticing and rich, albeit slightly overly sweet and a balance is in need.
T: a compelling roast-malty+roast-nutty flavour with hints of tabacco, charred+lightly-smoked woodiness, and very dark chocolates upfront, followed by a healthy dose of sour-sweet dark fruits (smoked black plums) as a balancer, while a mixed, aromatic ending touch (coffee-ish, vanilla powder, faintly cinnamon and licorice) along with a semi-dryish and chewy bitter-sweetness linger beautifully deeply down the palate.
M&D: softly-carbonated on the mouthfeel (though not silky smooth enough), 3D-structured and beautifully-crafted, the body is lighter than suggested by the semi-rich flavour and not a faint trace of alc. is shown anywhere in the pint, making it a very delicious and dangerously quaffable "robust porter"... Having tried three beers by Alcazar, I find my hearts and minds gradually won over by the microbrewery... This is a really delicious example of "strong porter" (at least for me), and I crave to taste it on cask in the future!
