Comes in a standard brown half-liter bottle with a dark label featuring a sailing ship plying the waters of the Volga river. "Volzhanin" means "of the Volga". I can't figure out what "Akhtuba" means, and none of my native Russian speaking friends is sure either. Rice is listed as an ingredient. Best before 1/19/04, I opened it on 12/11/03.

The liquid is clear orange gold under a two fingered white head wiht some contour and a bit of lace. The nose is mild, but fresh and malty. The beer is only lightly carbonated, and semi-heavy in the mouth. The opening taste features a good deal of barley malt, followed quickly by a rather pronounced, not quite harsh, metallic hoppy bite. The aftertaste is a touch tinny, with a trace of rice lurking in the background. I expected worse...
