Those who have been to Extreme Beer Fest before know the drill: Each year, Dogfish Head and BeerAdvocate brew an extreme collaboration beer to be poured at Extreme Beer Fest in Boston, Mass. For 2015, Dogfish Head collaborated on two beers with the Alström Brothers. Starting with the same base beer (a beautifully f’ed up Export-style Stout—usually a drier, leaner version of an Imperial Stout), the brew team then added roasted buckwheat and heirloom Chinese Forbidden Rice to the mash. When it came time to transfer the beer from the brew kettle to the fermentation vessel, they let the ever-omnivorous Chico yeast take care of the rest. But the creativity and fun didn’t end there. The beer was split into two previously used oak barrels. And finally, in February, to celebrate the fest, the greater beer community, and the seventh year that Dogfish Head has been the sole sponsor, they held a contest to decide on a name for each of the Stouts. Congrats to BA user kkulacki from Massachusetts, who submitted the winning entries!

Draft. A little Extreme Beer Fest teaser. Pours deep black with almost zero head. Carbonation slowly rises up the sides of the goblet. Has some hearty Stout aromas. Roast, dark, bitter malts. There is also a slightly vinous, winey scent. The mango, kiwi, pineapple and papaya are quite an interesting choice to add to this beer; I love those fruits and I definitely sniff some serious fruitiness in here, too. Flavor mp doesn't exactly come together as easily as the nose. It starts off Stout but very quickly, the winey, almost vinegary barrel character kicks in. Roast and some char then meet the medley of fruits. It finishes bitter but with ripe fruit. Light tart tang in the end. Body is rather full. Softer carbonation. Slick. I thought this brew was nest but one serving was definitely enough.
