I had the pleasure of visiting the new Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth, DE. What a cool looking place and improvement on what was already a great place. I had the Caske Romano, a 6% ABV Porter served on cask and exclusively at the pub.
Pours a black with hints of dark brown color. A great looking fluffy, creamy and silky head shows great retention and foamy lacing throughout.
The aroma opens positively with notes of dark fruit, raisin and plum, more Belgian like than Stout/Porter. However, aromas of cocoa, dark chocolate, and coffee beans soon set in. A nice toasty malt nose, with notes of caramel and toffee, is supported by notes of bright citrusy hops.
Very pleasant drinking. It is sweet, smooth and creamy with a nice balance of dark fruit and lightly roasted malts. Flavors of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, cocoa and coffee align with the aroma, while the citrusy hops add a nice zest.
Medium to full bodied with a very gentle carbonation as per the cask. A dry roasty espresso bean finish is pleasant.
Awesome! What a delicious and pleasant surprise. Part Porter, and part Irish Dry Stout, like a Guinness with DFH like flavors.
