A few days before leaving for my summer Rehoboth visit I saw this on the website as being on tap at the brewpub.. needless to say, I was pumped and I certainly was not disappointed. The pour is this super dark, porter/stout like appearance with barely any light passing thru and a dark head. Aromas are toasted, hoppy (obviously), yet also with a chocolatey sweetness. Very interesting. Flavor is quite complex.. Its almost a bit reminicent of a porter with the dark, roasty sweetness mixed with the hops, but at the same time it clearly isn't a porter and I don't even know if I would guess it was one. Quite unique indeed and delicious at the same time. I really hope this(or a variation of it) will possibly be bottled in the future. Mouth and drinkability are both good and fairly standard for a stronger ale.. good full-bodied mouthfeel and not too heavy, could be a bit much after two pints or so. Deffinitely awesome.

This one was as advertised....black. Opaque with a nice light tan head that left a ton of lacing.

The aroma was of dark roasted malts, coffee, bakers chocolate, hint of vanilla, burnt toffee, citrus hops.

The flavor started with the coffee and dark, bitter chocolate up front before the hops came through. Nicely bitter citrus hops balanced out the dark malts fairly well.

Fuller medium body with smooth carbonation. Great brew, but I think I could (would) enjoy this one more when the heat and humidity die down a bit. Bring this one back again later in the fall!

Poured from tap at Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, DE

Appearance: A nice mahogany brown in color, billowing head sits atop this beautiful looking beer, lacing and retention all around are perfect.

Smell: I get alot of hoppiness up front here, with a decent size malt backbone to back it up, citrus properties pair nicely with an almost crystalized malt which isn't too overbarring and lets the hops shine through. Nice!

Taste: Almost like a more malted version of the 60 Minute IPA! Very hoppy up front with loads of grapefruit, citrus-esque flavors, and a touch of alcohol. Clean and very smooth. The maltiness adds a nice spiciness and flavorful backbone to support the hops. Picture a 60 Minute with a slight addition of malt to support it and you have Whassthat, very different yet delicious!

Mouthfeel: Same as the 60 Minute yet with a bigger body to it, but not so much, the malt does add a nice smooth feel on the tongue but not enough to shy away the overall feel of an IPA. Bitterness is crisp and right on point.

Drinkability: Overall this beer drinks just like the 60 Minute yet the Whassthat is more refined featuring a deep brown color with malt as the base of this IPA. You could even compare it to the Indian Brown yet this IPA actually drinks like an IPA. An odd combination to say the least but one of the better brewpub exclusives I've had at Dogfish Head!
