Midnight Cascade is a bold and beautifully crafted Black IPA that rises from the dark depths of our Milton Brewery. This brew honors the rich legacy of innovative brewing by being meticulously recreated from vintage mid-2000s manuscripts.

With a harmonious blend of tradition and creativity, Midnight Cascade is brimming with complex flavors from the enticing bouquet of dank pine to a lively burst of bright citrus and finished off with just the right tough of roast to round it out. This beer is the perfect companion for adventurous palates seeking a distinctive and unforgettable experience.

Beer is pitch black, absolutely no light gets through. Nice dense 3 finger head with good retention, that makes for some good domage. Some very slight lacing is left, but that could be my glass.

Aroma brings some deep roastiness, and slight sweetness, as well as a fruity/bright, resinous hop aroma. Nothing insane, but it is solidly hoppy. Generally the hops cover the malts, despite the roasted grain.

Flavor is balanced despite the strong hoppy aroma. Not all that sweet, but a good balance between a decent craft stout and a strong but solid IPA. Any sweetness is coming from the flavors of the hops and that slightly floral, fruity, sweet note. The finish is really where the roasted malts shine, where they come across as a nice smooth finale.

The feel is nice and full, with a very long lasting, malty finish. Generally this might be a bit thick for some, but I feel it is fitting for the style. A nice slow sipper overall.

Overall this is a good beer and a nice reminder that black IPAs not only work, but are pretty damn good. Personally I enjoy a malty beer over a hoppy beer of comparable quality, but this brings the best of both worlds. There is a slight clash between the two at first, as my tastebuds had to figure out what was going on, but this is quite the complex beer and I generally enjoyed it. I will say, as a malt head, I enjoyed this out of the can slightly more than out of a glass.

A - Pitch black pour with really dense creamy caramel colored lacing.

S - Dark roast aroma that's equalized with citrus and some orange along with a little bit of earthiness.

T - Chocolate toast / roasty malt base with some citrus over top while finishing with a nice amount of pine to balance things out.

M - Medium body with nice prickly carbonation and a fairly dry finish.

O - Dig it.

On tap at Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells very roasty and pretty bitter, with orange peel, coffee, and dark chocolate.

This is really bold, punchy, and vibrant take on the style. There’s a lot of resinous pine, orange peel, and grapefruit, with just a hint of citrusy sweetness. There’s also a pretty heavy roast character here. The beer just really seems to sing, with lots of flavor but not one thing overpowering anything else.

This is medium bodied, creamy, rich, but pleasantly bitter on the finish.

There’s a lot to like for this one – I crave black IPAs a lot lately, for whatever reason, and this really hit the spot.
