Consumed, and re-consumed, over 40 marvelous minutes at the Tap House.
Purview is a stunning, warm chestnut color with nice clarity. It displayed an adequate head that held on some, despite not being thick or tall. Very little visible carbonation was evident. One would wish for some more lacing, too—but the hue of the brew defines the view.
The smell is mostly malty with only hints of spice rounded off in sugar. Consistent with the style, there’s not a great deal going on in the nose. It gets a bit smoky when left to come all the way to room temperature.
The taste profile is truly remarkable. It delivers an almost perfect balance of spice and malt up front with the later entry of well-chosen hops bringing malic acid and citrus right on cue. Then there’s a tannic drying with hint of apple-bacon smoked gouda on the back of the tongue as each swallow goes down. A well-placed bitterness in the aftertaste slices the threat of weighty sweetness, keeping things in balance.
It’s smooth in the mouth and very easy to drink. There’s the right amount of hop oil to carry all the flavors to a lengthy finish. But if there’s a deficit, just a little more buzz of carbonation would further improve a very good drinking experience.
The simple platform of an American Brown Ale has been expanded quite nicely without creative overextension. It was hard to leave the bar knowing that none could be carried along. I’m left with the dreamy memory of a beer that recreates snow in aspens viewed from a toasty lodge fireplace—a wonderful escape from the summer heat at the beach.

Had at the BrewPub 7/7/13..
Although listed as an American Brown Ale above, this beer is really "lost" between a Smoked Porter, Cascadian Dark Ale and American Brown Ale.. (taken from DFH)
This beer was just ok to me, as I did not quite favor it to others I had on the same day..
A: Almost a light chestnut brown color with small head
S: Some honey/ sweet smell with malts
T: Mild Hops with the honey and malts. Not too much/little with the hops.
M: Could not notice much alcohol content here and was for the most part smooth.
These notes were not taken at the time, and were from memory.
