Paid $5.50 for a pint from El Toro in Morgan Hill, CA.
Poured by president and brewmaster Geno, this one came back with a 3/4 inch head that is frothy towards the top and fizzy towards the bottom. Head retains at 1/4 inch for a couple minutes, then shrinks to nothing. The darkest opaque brown I've seen, but not quite black. Nice lacing.
Does not smell very strong. Has a home brew smell to it that many of the El Toro brews have. It is a slightly unfiltered barley aroma that is mildly unpleasant. Does not remind me much of other porters I've tried.
Like the smell, the taste is mild as well. The barley flavor mentioned above comes through again and this one does not strike me as being especially well balanced.
Watery and light to medium body. Medium carbonation.
Not my favorite from El Toro, but they surely make other tasty brews.
