In December 2022, we collaborated on a recipe with our long-time friend and colleague Vasili Gletsos of Wunderkammer Biermanufaktur, located in Albany, Vermont. The purpose of the collaboration was to brew a beer that could be enjoyed by the fireside during the depths of winter. A Baltic porter.
A fraction of this collaborative effort was afforded the opportunity to spend nearly twelve months in 7-year charred-oak rye barrels from one of the finest producers in Kentucky. Under our watchful eye, we carefully monitored the developmental arc of this beer...As the dusk of winter begins to fall, Rye Barrel Aged Athene Noctua is ready to spread its contemplative wings.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.
This smells very chocolatey, with roasted malt, vanilla, rye spice, and oak.
The base beer is excellent here, so it stands to reason that this version would also be very nice. This is exceptionally creamy and chocolatey, with a very pleasant accented roasty spice from the rye barrel. There’s coffee, a touch of vanilla and oak, and just the lightest hint of dark fruit as well.
This is medium bodied, creamy, and not boozy in the slightest.
I wish I had some more of this one, I really enjoyed it.
