This dark English ale is fashioned after British "old ales" and has been a seasonal favorite for several years. A healthy dose of caramel malts (light and dark) contribute a deep red color that is tempered with just a touch of roasted barley. All of this combines to make a VERY full bodied beer. To balance all of the malts, a healthy dose of hops is added. Simcoe hops are used for bittering and Ahtanums for aroma and dry hopping. (O.G. - 17P/1068. Hops - 69.5 IBUs)

Deep chestnut hue, with a light haze. Thin, soapy tan head manages sparse lace. Burnt chocolate and mellow citrus, with hints of pine in aroma. Dark caramel and butterscotch hints as well. Flavorwise, molasses and bitter cocoa dominate. Slight diacetyl. Pine sap hop undertone seems a touch obtrusive. Pronounced roasted barley bitterness. Moderately hopped, with paltry residual sweetness, and thus quite dry overall. Passably smooth, but a notch thin and over attenuated in mouthfeel. Finishes with hints of burnt toffee and biscuit. A unique brew, with assertive roasted grain character. Akin to a balsy American brown / Old Ale hybrid. Somewhat dangerous. 1.070 O.G., 60 IBUs.
