This a truly double barrelled stout. Coffee beans and roasted malts share many flavor characteristics. They both have roasted and slightly bitter flavors, but each also brings special flavors from the original grain and bean. We have found a fine balance between the two in this beer which showcases equally the flavors and aromas of both. About 5 gallons of cold processed coffee are added to a batch of this special stout (it is its own unique brew, designed specifically to blend with the coffee). Served unfiltered. (O.G. 14.4P/1058. Virtually black, with a garnet haze when held to light. Thin, dense, steadfast head yields loose lace. Smoky dark roast coffee and burnt barley dominates the aroma. Buttery caramel and milk chocolate hints. Quite tame aromawise. Dark unsweetened baker's chocolate is prevalent in flavor. Burnt toffee present as a persistent undertone. Assertive combination of roasted grain, coffee and hop bitterness lends an agreeable, drying sharpness. Lingering impression of chocolate covered espresso beans. Trace grapefruit hop flavor. Lightly dextrinous and a hair thin in mouthfeel. Could use more girth. Finishes carbonaceous, smokey and parching. A well rounded stout with stately coffee character. Addictively drinkable, yes, but not a showstopper.
