Reviewed from notes. On tap in August 2009.
Pours a moderate golden color with a white head and just a bit of lacing. The nose is really faint with a bit of grainy sweetness and some very mild hops. Just a bit of diacetyl comes in. The taste is, unfortunately, a bit of a butter bomb. Not much past that. Creamy feel with a pretty decent body, but I can't get past the off flavors. This unfortunately plagued a few of their brews while we were there.

Having spent the previous summer in Germany and growing very, very fond of the helles lagers there, I was pretty excited to try Free State's take on the style.
The beer sits in the glass a bright butter yellow with a small head that settles fast. Aroma is of honey and biscuits. Taste has a lot of honey sweetness and some good dough-like flavor. Spicy hops try to cut their way through, but are ultimately unsuccessful. They are detectable, but the honey flavoring really dominates here.
Overall it's an enjoyable brew, but from my experience, it falls a bit short of the style. It needs to be quite a bit hoppier, less sweet, and finish drier.
