From the website: ...a blend of Scottish and German malts resulting in a medium body, dark red hue, and a hint of roastiness. Amarillo hops contribute some earthy, citrus character, but piney, resinous Chinook hops really stand out in the finish of this winter warmer. The Skinny: A medium bodied, dark red ale, with a pronounced, piney hop finish."
The red isn't quite solidly shown in the appearance as it pours a ruby chestnut color. A tad soapy head and light lacing.
Aroma begins with a light roast, moves to a quick sweetness and then hoppy on the end.
Taste is less malty, but the sweetness lingers a bit longer. Hops enter in the end and bites hard and quick. Resiny but not syrupy. Warming. Nice middle beer between malt and hops bombs.

Had this on tap two different occasions and the first time it tasted much hoppier than the second. Either way... Vortex Red is an attractive rusty garnet; smell isn't as big as Copperhead, but there's a definite spicy hop presence; taste varied, with the first time having a powerful bitterness and good malt presence and the second time it seemed to have a more subdued bitterness, resulting in a more balanced, malty brew; medium-bodied, lowish carbonation (typical at Free State); overall another yummy beer...though probably not one that will stick out in my mind (like their Cimarron Red).
