I love Free State. These beers are so amazing.

Old Stormy is an aged version of their strong IPA, Stormwatch Ale. It's aged for a yearish in wine barrels, with some versions aged in whiskey barrels.

Poured from the tap into a 5 oz sample glass. This beer was a dark burgundy, almost like red wine. Has a moderate head that leaves little lacing down the glass.

Smells amazing - deep dark sugars, old aged hops - could be the best smelling IPA I've come across.

Taste is full of typical IPA malts with almost a roasted character. Very strong hints of caramel. The maltiness is somewhat reminiscent of a barleywine. The bitterness of this brew is significantly lower than Stormwatch, with a very sweet resiny aftertaste like hoppiness present.

This is the Stormwatch aged in oak barrels for about 4 months.
Pours a cloudy off ruby/brown body with a pretty good, creamy head. A bit splotchy and patchy, the head reveals good lacing all the way down.
Not much of a strong aroma. Some piney hops and wet wood. Very faint vanilla
Usually I don't like oaked beer as the woodiness tends to overwhelm the beer, in my opinion. This one is just about right. A slight hint of wood up front and in the back. The pine hops blend nicely with it to present a crisp, clean bite. Not too strong. Caramel comes and goes, but is never very strong and keeps the hops/oak from running away.
Easy drinking. Not harsh. Still, would like to see more IPA-ness in this brew.
