So, this is a new brew from them different from the Smokey Hill Ale listed: "The base malt in Smoky Hill porter is produced in Germany in the home of Rauchbier (Bamberg) over a beechwood fire. This rauchmalt is combined with modest amounts of crystal malt and two types of chocolate malt that add sweet and chocolaty notes to balance the assertive smoke qualities. Hops really take a backseat in this style, so as not to interfere with the complex smoky aromatics"--Free State
This pours a very dark brown almost black. thick off brown head gives it a creamy look to it. Unfortunately, the aroma is weak. Some very small tinges of smoke come out, but not much else.
Fortunately though, the flavor is big. Smoked meat, dark plum and caramel malt blend nicely. Their website mentions and gives tribute to Alaskan smoked Porter and with good merit. While this one isn't as rich, deep or delicious as the Alaskan, it's well on its way. Some may find the Alaskan too much, and then this Free State version will be right up their alley.
Minor pine from the hops, but that could be my imagination. This is a nice smoked porter; good on a cold f%$ing day.
