As the name implies, this is a big beer. Though the style doesn't really exist, think of it as sort of an imperial pale ale. Made with pale ale malt and pale caramel malt, this beer has a light color but a full body. Horizon and Fuggles hops go into the kettle and imported East Kent Goldings are used for the dry hop, giving a distinctly British hop character. The hopping level of 72 IBUs balances the fullness provided by an O.G. of 18P/1072. This is actually pretty close to the strength that a Pale Ale of the 18th or 19th century might have reached back before the general weakening of beers.

Hazy copper hue, w/ a creamy, dense off white head that leaves intricate Belgian lace. The aroma is a balanced combination of pear like fruity esters, moderate caramel sweetness and floral, lightly earthy hops. The hop nose could be more pronounced. As the beer warms, toasty malt along with buttery diacetyl surfaces. Round, medium caramel malt sweetness upfront in flavor gives way to assertive, lingering biscuit malt and pronounced, yet well integrated diacetyl. Hop bitterness barely balances the rich malt profile, leaving the overall balance slightly skewed towards malt sweetness. Earthy and slightly woody Fuggles hop flavor completes the overall British hop profile to this brew. Mild fruity and bubblegum esters are present from start to finish. Full bodied, w/ a smooth, rich mouthfeel from the ample residual dextrins. Finishes buttery, bready with lingering hop bitterness. This is Free State's "double" IPA. It most closely approximates the original British IPA's, before they were dumbened down. Mammoth IPA's malt profile is rich, but the hop bitterness falls a bit short of providing balance. Very drinkable and flavorful, nonetheless. With a higher hop bitterness, this would be excellent.
