This dark beer style is a bit lighter than stouts (often much lighter, actually) but has a pleasant roasty flavor and a clean dry finish. The name porter is thought to originate from the rail porters who were so fond of the beverage in early England. This beer honors Kansas' position as a hotbed of the populist movement of the 1800s when farmers, tired of being screwed by the big eastern banks and big railroad monopolies, started raising "less corn and more hell!", up to and including an armed stand-off at the statehouse. This beer is a fine dark beer for the heat of the summer, lighter than stout but still quite flavorful. (O.G. - 14P/1056. Hops - 43 IBUs)

Poured on tap into a pint glass at the brewery.

This beer is a deep rich brown - unlike a lot of Porters which are almost black if not black, this porter can best be described as truly walnut in appearance. Minimal head and lacing throughout.

The taste was mostly of chocolate and coffee with a small amount of hop and anise taste that lingers after the beer has been consumed.

Mouthfeel is not too thick, a little thinner than a stout so better with regards to drinkability than most of Free State's thicker brews.

A rich, dark beer. Hints of brown and reddish hues penetrate the dark body. Soft, white head seems dense with a bit of soapiness added. Average lacing, a bit slick
Chocolate and coffee aromas present a delicate nose, not as robust as the appearance might hint. Anise and prune also come through.
No dominant flavor in the taste. Good balance between coffee, anise, leather, and cocoa. Semi-sweet. Very clean yet flavorful aftertaste.
Perhaps a bit thin feeling, but overall a very nice porter. I'm happy with this one.

Deep brown, w/ clear ruby around the rim of the glass. Beige, creamy well retained head. Intricate Belgian lace. Mild chocolate and dark caramel dominates the aroma. Faint citrusy hop nose. Understated aromawise. Caramel and chocolate laced sweetness upfront is ceded by a pronounced citrusy hop flavor and lightly burnt malt. Mild hop bitterness, assertive hop flavor. Moderate body, smooth mouthfeel. A bit lacking in roasted character all around. Clean and balanced. Finishes with mild residual roasted grain sweetness briefly lingering. An excellent session porter with citrus hop flavor above the norm. Quaffable and devoid of flaws.
