In the years since it was given to the city of Lawrence in 1955, the 'Prairie' class steam locomotive #1073 has been a source of interest and entertainment to young and old alike. This black stout was made using a generous portion of freshly toasted grains as well as a sizable dollop of dark molasses. Hop flavor and aroma is minimal in order to focus the flavor on the toasted malts. (O.G. - 16.95P/1068. Hops - 50 IBUs)

Dark brown, almost black, highlights of red around the edges. Tan head, small, good retention, nice lacing pattern. Faint nose, disappointing actually, burnt malt, slightly sweet. Sweet tasting like oatmeal with molasses then a mixture of coffee and roasted malt follows. No detectable sign of hops. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel but more substance would help (thin)
drinkable and worth a try.

Approaching black, with trace clear crimson apparent when held to light. Creamy dark tan rocky head leaves web like lace. Burnt barley, light chocolate and butterscotch upfront in aroma, w/ a subtle waft of prunes and molasses. Fig laced sweetness initially in flavor yields to buttery chocolate and coffeeish roasted barley bitterness. Lightly tangy molasses and dark caramel malt complement roasted grain bitterness well, lending a rounded overall malt character. Non descript hop bitterness emerges late to adequately offset residual sweetness. A touch lightly bodied, with only a slight viscosity in mouthfeel. Finishes w/ lingering impression of burnt prunes. #1073 is a flavorful, relatively balanced stout. Somewhat higher in dark fruit character than the typical brewpub stout, with a mellow chocolate presence. More body from residual dextrins and this could be excellent.

Thick reddish- black in color, nice thick and creamy tan head, nice lasting lace. Aroma of burnt sugar and chocolate, roasted, coffee, molasses and chocolate, nice burnt bitterness. Medium body with a thick and creamy mouthfeel, burnt bitter and sweet finish, a pretty good stout.
