'like cocoa'
Appears dark but slight red tint when up to light. Head light brown, thin. All head appear same. Note all heads fade towards very end. Lacing all way to bottom. Taste does not live up to smell. Smell chocolate mild and lots coffee. Great smell. Taste like dark, dry chocolate. Slight bitterness after a while.
Very thin. Disappointingly so. Not very complex. Carbonation minimal.

Shared a taster on-tap as past of a flight at the brewery in May 2013; Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, Long Beach, USA. As part of a six-week West Coast beer tour. I rate to taste, not to style. See my blog for more details: carbeers.wordpress.com

On nitro tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thick rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and some nutty aromas. Taste is much the same with a cocoa flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp but creamy mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

On nitro at the source itself, on to the beer:

Looks black with no shortage of creamy tanned lace. I mean, it completely covers the glass as the beer is consumed! And the nose, while soft, brings to mind breakfast. Roasted coffee bean and smoked bacon will do that.

As with the nose, the taste is soft, however it remains quite tasty and very easy to approach. Smoked meats and coffee beans, all with a fariy creamy and smooth body, translates to a beer that would be a great breakfast option or anytime drinking.

On nitro at Beachwood Brewing

A: The pour is a very dark brown color with a creamy khaki colored head.

S: A nice roasted malt aroma to this one as well as some coffee and dark chocolate and cocoa powder. There is a light earthiness as well as a bit of licorice.

T: The flavor is somewhat surprisingly bitter. A decent amount of coffee as well as roasted malts and dark chocolate. Just a hint of dark fruits, molasses, and licorice. A fairly robust earthiness as well.

M: The body is medium with a smooth, creamy carbonation.

O: A nice beer. Much better than a lot if the examples of the style, easy to drink, too.

On nitro-tap at Beachwood II,

A: Pours black with a firm brown nitro head, long lasting and great lace.

S: Roasted malt galore, coffee.

T: Strong roasted malt with some dark chocolate on the sweeter end. Still fairly bitter, but a flavour I enjoyed.

M: Even on the nitro the moutfeel is firm and full. Creamy and smooth.

O: Nice to have a locally brewed Irish Stout that's this good. Love it if they put this on at Beachwood I so I don't have to drive out to Long Beach.
