On Tap

Pizza Port
Carlsbad, CA

Dark black in color with a thin dark brown head. Thin spiderwebs of lace are left down the glass.

Very muted aroma without much of a hop presence. What's here is a pleasant roast character and perhaps a touch of smoke, but the aroma is quite faint.

Mid to high bitterness and lots of roast make up the flavor. This is a relatively simple, particularly roasty, though easy drinking black ale.

Medium mouthfeel with ample carbonation.

I was unfortunately a bit disappointed with this beer, perhaps because so much of what I've had from Beachwood has been so tremendous.

*Notes from 09/30/11

A: Warrior arrived a dark almost pitch black with just a slight softer edge to it. My pour was to the brim leaving only a thin tan head that was still and lifeless. Looks thick for an IPA and leaves some droopy lace.

S: Aroma is rather faint but smells of dark roast malts with an earthy char. Some black licorice. Light pine but not a ton of any hop aroma there.

T: Tastes of roasted grains. Some coffee and chocolate. Black licorice. Pine, spice, and a little bit of hop florals. Moderate bitterness. Tastes more like a porter with some nice roasty flavors.

M: Light to moderate body and a slick creamy texture with a nice dry crisp finish.

D: Some nice dark roast and chocolate flavors with a moderate bitterness. Not bad and really quite drinkable but light on the hops for me.

I guess I was expecting just a bit more from all the great word on Beechwood BBQ.

A- Jet black with some transparent edges. Little retention; off white head that leaves some lacing on the glass.

S- Dark malts, charcoal, hops, bitter coffee. they all go nicely together, but are not very pungent.

T- Bitter chocolate, hops. Lots of residual bitterness.

M- nice light-med body, good carbonation.

O- Good, but a little rough around the edges.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad.

A: The beer is black with a mountainous light brown head which exhibits good retention and leaves sheets of lacing in the wake of the recession.

S: Perfumy pine resin wafts from the glass and it accompanies earth, grapefruit, and floral notes. Roasted malt is powerful, and it seems to slightly overshadow the hops in the aroma.

T: Moderately roasted malt blends with a moderate level of dry bitterness. Once again the malt seems a bit too powerful for the pine and grapefruit rind.

M: Upper medium in body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and dry.

Overall: A good beer but it seemed to be closer to Stout than Black IPA. Still an enjoyable beer from Julian and I was very happy to find it on tap locally.

On-tap at Beachwood

A: Almost black with a sturdy finger of tan/khaki head and some lacing.

S: Very dank grapefruit and pine hop aromas. A touch of roast and chocolate, but it's also just amazingly hoppy. A lot of floral notes to it as well. A light smokiness.

T: A bit of smoke, lots of roast, and lots of pine. There is a bit of grapefruit and pineapple hops to it as well. It's quite bitter with a lot of that coming from piney hops, but a pretty good amount coming from the roasted malts, too.

M: Medium in body with a medium carbonation.

O: Very hoppy, but still a bit too much roast character for me.
