On tap at the Bru Room at BAR. Bartender accidentally poured it into a full-sized shaker pint instead of a smaller glass. Oh well, more for me to review. Review from notes from 2/7/13.
A: Dark brick red/brown. Bit of haze. A little bit of head that persists.
S: Sweet dark fruit. Earthy, maybe a little vegetable. Bit of hops. All rather muted.
T/M: Sweet and malty. Caramel malt. Alcohol bite. Moderate hoppiness. There's a deep bitterness, but it seems almost medicinal rather than hoppy. The mouthfeel is slick and smooth with low carbonation.
O: 1000 Pound Gorilla seems like kind of a tweener between an American and an English Barleywine. Not as sweet as an English, but also not hoppy as an American. The overall effect is therefore muddled. The medicinal bitterness makes it a little hard to get through. I didn't hate it but I probably wouldn't order it again.
