a dry rye stout as they call it, but not quite an irish dry type to me, and the rye is spirited in this, a well made and nicely refined beer, a creative recipe too, but in a subtle way, well done overall, my first from these guys when we popped in to check them out, great space and selection for sure! way more brown than black, reddish edges in the natural light of their taproom, thick half inch plus of tan head with great retention and some web lacing as i work it down, good clarity, low shine. the nose is simple, earthy, rye evident, some chocolate malt, light roasted bitterness, hints of chicory and baking chocolate, bread yeast and in fact dark bread as well, a baked warmth to this, and it seems off dry rather than wiped out dry. the flavor showcases the rye quite well, and it kicks in pretty early, balanced by some up front generic malt sweetness, but the body stays light and this is more dry by the end of it, hints of chestnut, bran, and maple as well, definitely casts fall vibes, and its real drinkable with a lighter body, soft carbonation, and enough complexity that its intriguing so i drink it kind of fast as a process of discovery. clever recipe and good attention to detail, i was impressed with this place, especially for them being so new still...
