On-draught @ Volstead Trading Company.
Tastes like a Euro lager, not a pilsner proper. Lacks Noble hop flavour and crisp clean pilsner malts, not to even get into whether multidecoction mash was used or not.
Has a darker sweeter malt bill, almost like they cheated with honeyed pale malt or some richer specialty malt instead of committing to pilsner malt.
Lacks the spiciness of Saaz, the dryness of a Czech Pilsner, or the herbal floral flavour of a German pils hopped with Noble hops.
I'd expect if anything a New Zealand brewed pilsner would stray from tradition on the hop side, not the malt side, but here we are with an unbalanced malt-emphatic attempt at the style. Underwhelming.
