Poured from the can into a large snifter glass.
Mirror like shiny appearance. Practically reflective with a real distinct copper red and pale orange shine. Totally see through, with a faint khaki head that leaves a pretty bib bubbled collar while settling. Looks literally like a red Christmas light bulb lit up in a glass.
Aroma seems to stick to traditional, with not much character of the added flavors. Virtually no sense of coconut or chocolate, but classic hot fruit and hop angled heated nose of cherry, caramel, and lots fussel heated alcohol notes.
Palate improves. Light bodied, but surprisingly subtle and sneaky. Mid palate contains more of the heat and fruity character somewhere between hot cherry and raisin. Finish really sneaks up nicely. Toasty little hints of coconut that grow as the beer warms and heats up. Quite a large amount of carbonation for a barleywine on this too, cuts through with lots of tingly mouthfeel.
Comes out unexpected, but in the end the coconut angle delivers real solidly. Still controllable at this high abv but just barely.
