Had this on tap in Shermetevo 2 Airport, Moscow. I have noticed that certain Russian and Polish Euro-style lagers have an unusual, musty sweetness. I have no idea what to attribute this to. That quality is right up front in Stary Melnik.
Compared to other Russian lagers I've tried (Baltika, Siberian Corona) this seems less carbonated. It's pleasant enough for casual drinking. The additives aren't terribly noticeable under the mild hop and apricot notes.
It isn't the best Russian beer I've ever had. It's sort of comforting, though. That sweet mustiness always brings back memories.

Poured a clear golden color with moderate white creamy head. Great retention and sporadic lacing.
Smell shows fome fruitiness, with a nice balancing hop presence.
Taste also blends the malt and hops well, presenting a nice refreshing beer.
Leaft a mild dryness in the mouth which was pleasureable.
A nice easy drinking beer, tasty and refreshing.

Very ordinary lager. Cannot give it extra points for assertivity or complexity, but there's no reason to abuse it. It has a rather slender body, malty aroma and taste, a bit of yeasty fruitiness and modestly hoppy finish. This beer could be much sweeter, considering a fair amount of alcohol and deserves kudos for being on the dryer side.

Comes in a tall dark brown longneck half liter bottle with a dark label featuring a windmill. The name means "Old Miller". Ingredients conform to the purity law. Bottled on 6/8/03, I opened mine on 9/3/03. Yes, the brewery is operated by the Efes mega-brewer out of Istanbul. This is their flagship Russian product. They also brew an Efes pale and dark, and Warsteiner under contract. In this reviewer's opinion, the Stariy Melnik line (there are at least four varieties) is by far the best product this brewery makes. That ain't saying much.
Poured a clear rich golden hue under a thin fizzy white head that faded very quickly. The smell is very malty, with perhaps a touch of rice. The mouth is very carbonated, and slightly heavy. There's a decent malt opening here, followed by a good hoppy bite. The bitterness sticks around in the aftertaste, but takes on a less pleasant metallic edge. Overall, not a bad product.
