Codex Gigas - The Devil's Bible
Codex Gigas is the largest surviving medieval manuscript in the world. It contains a massive illustration of the devil on page 290, which was drawn by a monk who summoned Lucifer. According to legend, this monk, known as Herman the Recluse, had broken his monastic vows and was sentenced to be walled up alive. In a desperate bid to save his life, he promised the abbot he would write a book containing all human knowledge in a single night to glorify the monastery forever. As midnight approached and he realized the impossible task was far from finished, he prayed not to God, but to the fallen angel for help. Lucifer answered the call, finishing the manuscript in mere moments in exchange for the monk's soul. Lucifer's portrait is a tribute to his dark savior...
