a very unique brown ale here, done with local montana grain and hitting a ton of nuance for the style, impressively well made, my first from burnt tree, already cant wait for my next after this one! i think they are calling this a double brown, which maybe is true in terms of flavor, but i think of that with a higher abv of course, so this really isnt that, at least not traditionally, but its great beer. lighter brown color, reddish chestnut hued, short bubbly white head from the tap, fizzy carbonation evident. the aroma is awesome, beautiful grain complexity from high end cocoa powder to raisin and fig, wet wood, maple but not too sweet, tree bark and acorn or something, bran and dark toast, smells complex and fancy, even without much fermentation character or anything. distinct chocolate and dark fruit layers in the flavor too, i love the grain in here, fresh and interesting, some roast to me here despite its lighter color, a definite baked warmth but also neat woodiness and depth, hints of hazelnut and walnut, natural process coffee, and even light fall spice at the end. cohesive and dynamic, smooth and medium bodied, a little lighter carbonation works well, slow flow, more time to appreciate every little wrinkle this has to show off. impressively good, especially for a brewery i had never heard of, and in a style that can sometimes be samey and even boring. this is really solid, molasses and raisin late, not sure if this is actually made with cookie elements, it could be, but the grain approximates some of this really well too, cozy without being boozy, lovely this time of year!
