Poured into a Treehouse Teku glass from a bottle that had been in the cellar since Christmas 2024.
Appearance: The beer that flowed out of the bottle looked a tad on the light side. The beer once in the glass took on a darker appearance, but the limited yet present carbonation combined to look like a glass of cola. I feel with these stronger stouts, they either look like spent motor oil or a cola soda. This looks like the latter. When I performed the light test, I couldn't really see much of any light getting through, so there's that. Swirled it around. Got a little more carbonation with a khaki bit of quickly dissipating head and no real lacing to mention.
Aroma: Impressive and surprising based on the somewhat disappointing appearance. Definitely a little heat coming off of this, and at 13.5% that's no real surprise. It isn't off-putting, but is definitely noticeable. Somewhat sweet and syrupy aromas. Maybe cinnamon. Maybe sweet cream. Definitely pleasant with just a touch of heat. This is coming from big whiffs. Chocolatey, sweet, sugar, cinnamon.
Taste: Oh that's delightful. It's definitely a dessert beer. I wonder if there is lactose in here. Lots of sweetness for a strong beer. Must be some unfermentable sugars present. It's good, pronounced, definitely full of adjuncts though I think. There's some baking spice on the aftertaste that I can't pinpoint just yet. Solid. Strong, yet balanced. That isn't to say that this is a balanced beer overall. I'm getting pulled in different directions as opposed to having the flavors come together to bring me to a particular place. I almost just got that baking flavor...what is it? Can't put my finder on it yet. It's familiar, but in the background. It's coconut. I'm definitely getting a baker's coconut aspect here. I like it. It's a bit odd, but it's good. Definitely a dessert beer. It's like a Mounds candy bar in a glass. That's what I'm getting. The more I drink this, the more it's just like a strong, liquid form of a Mounds bar. It's good; I'm enjoying it. I wouldn't know how to create it necessarily but I think I could figure it out. If there isn't coconut in this beer then I would be blown away at how they achieved this flavor profile. Chocolatey, sweet, coconut....dessert beer. Poured my second glass and now that's all I can get. It's a Mounds candy bar with a little Hershey's syrup on top. That's the flavor profile.
Mouthfeel: For the ABV I think it's a little light. That's not necessarily bad. I'm confused a bit at how non-thick this is. It almost feels light, but it's certainly got a kick. There's enough light carbonation to help. I'm on the fence about the mouthfeel, but I'm leaning toward liking it. Very drinkable. I certainly enjoy the feel of this, but I think the beer could benefit from a little more body.
Overall: Kind of weird, definitely positive. At times on the light side, but also with a bit of heat and some syrup. I think they missed the mark with the balance a bit but this is very enjoyable. No off flavors; very clean beer. I think they accomplished what they intended to do. I'm not sure they need to do this. Definitely not something I'd buy on the regular. If I wanted a dessert stout to show someone though, this would be an excellent place to go. It's actually quite good. The more I drink, the more I like it. I think if I were sharing this bottle then my numbers may have ended a little lower than they probably will here today. The more I drink this, the more it grows on me. Perhaps it is meant to be savored, like a good dessert. I would definitely drink this again and would enjoy it, but much like the candy bar associated with this flavor profile, I doubt I would buy a bottle. Very solid effort overall, just maybe not my favorite. Now I'm going to probably crush the rest of this glass and enjoy the heck out of it.
