With Trade Route's new partners and new location in South King County, they've also augmented their menu to include some more mainstream beer styles. They still brew Asian-influenced beers, but this amber ale has quickly become their new best seller.
Chieftain is unfiltered yellow amber. Some minor malt sugars emerge in the nose but they're overwhelmed by yeast esters. These dominant yeast fragrances seem out of place in ambers where basic malt or hop notes work far more sensibly. Compounding this is a sharp citric flavor that seems overblown. Bittering isn't excessive, but hop flavor is over-amped and indelicate. Carbonation is minimal.
This ale isn't necessarily flawed but doesn't appeal to my personal sensibilities due to scorching hops and an intrusive yeast strain. It did seem to improve a bit in the presence of salted popcorn.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a dark, almost copperish, yellow with just less than an inch of slightly off-white head that left more lacing than usual for an amber.
The typical aroma for the style, slightly malty, with a hint of hop. The flavors were similar, however there was a sharp, lingering aftertaste that I couldn't put my finger on. This brewery is known for putting spices in their beers, so perhaps a spice I'm not familiar with.
Body and drinkability were typical for the style, nothing out of range. Overall a solid beer, worth trying if you see it, but not worth seeking out.
