Ithaca Beer Co. "Happy Pils"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, production coded but without freshness dating
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Deep gold body with a haze beneath a short head of bright white that fades almost immediately. The aroma is hoppy with spicy and herbal noble hops over a lightly grainy malt base. The flavor follows with a little more floral character, and a moderate balancing bitterness that brings it to a spicy and earthy dry finish. Medium-light in body and crisp with a standard carbonation level. Overall a decent German pilsner.

Poured into a half pint glass: color is straw, nearly clear, head is bright white with fine bubbles, good lacing on the glass.

Smell is light toast, biscuit, earth, grass.

Taste is pleasant, good malt presence, flavor is light biscuit, earth, toast, then lingering hop grass/earthiness.

Mouthfeel is crisp, moderate, lingering bitterness.

Overall a good pilsner, crisp, mostly clean, solid malt, maybe a touch bitter.

From the 21 fl. oz. bottle with no date inscribed. Sampled on June 17, 2017.

Kind of murky looking yellow pour with a modest white head that hangs around.

The aroma seems way too malty for a pilsener. It is kind of like tobacco with a low to no hop profile. I am wondering if this is an old bottle. No date so I do not know.

The body was in the medium range.

The taste also felt like a malt bomb not that I am expecting a whole lot of hop character for a Pilsener. It seemed kind of stale with a vague sweetness.

had it at the brewery, so the freshness factor may affect this rating, as opposed to getting a bottle that was not so fresh. This is GREAT pilsner. If you like a pilsner, this one is as good as the best I have had. Crisp, a bit of malt, a little bite, and a wonderful pilsner flavor with no off tastes or aftertastes.
Had it in a bottle after the brewery trip. Still very good. The bottle came from the brewery v isit, so freshness is pretty certain.

Poured into a pilsener glass, the appearance was a yellow transparent color with a finger’s worth of head that quickly settled to a film over top of the beer. Not much lace. Some carbonation could be seen rising at a moderate pace. The aroma had some biscuits/breadiness up front over top of some grassy hops. Light hop spice. The flavor was moderately sweet with a brisk touch of grassy hops. Slight bready sort of aftertaste, but even that is a stretch as there really wasn’t much of any aftertaste, honestly. Finish had some prickly carbonation hitting, odd, but alright, I guess. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation seemed to prickle a little bit just like in the finish, but it didn’t indicate anything bad about the beer. Overall, for the most part, everything seemed pretty good about this pilsener, though I couldn’t really tell if it was a German or a Czech one. Perhaps a confusing one and still, I’d give this another shot.

from the holiday weekend. 12oz bottle into a glass. Freshness dating was smeared, therefore illegible.

Yellow body, small white head, which quickly shrinks to ring and covering before disappearing altogether. Can be briefly resurrected by agitating.

Faint aroma of malt and yeast.

taste is as the nose.

light towards medium on the mouth, slightly sour and bitter on the finish.

Overall, and it might be a bit old, this beer has nothing much going for it. Not unpleasant, just not a lot there.

8/26...on draft at the brewery. Pours pale gold, white foam ring. Tart citrus nose, lemons. Light citrus strong taste. Crisp and smooth. Subtle German hop pokes through the citrus. Fresh and tasty. Nice summer beer.

Deep yellow in color with a light haze. Poured with a short, light creamy foam with medium retention. Medium pilsner malt aromas with light biscuit notes. Medium light earthy, lightly spicy hop aromas. Medium light bodied with a light smoothness through the middle and medium carbonation. Medium maltiness up front followed by spicy hops and an assertive bitterness through the middle to the end. Finished cleanly, and semi-dryly with an earthy, spicy bitter aftertaste. A bit lacking on appearance primarily due to clarity. Nice clean malty aroma, although hop aromas seemed to be a bit light. Balance tilts toward the hoppier side. Hop flavors are a bit overwhelmed by the higher bitterness which is a bit intense at the finish. If you like your pilsners bitter – this is the ticket, but generally this lacks hop and malt character.

Had this on 2016-05-18 in Columbia, PA from a 12oz bottle.

A - Pretty clear straw-gold with a 1-finger white head that drops quickly leaving sheeted lace.

S - Rising white bread, honey, floral.

T - Tasty Pils malt, noble hop spice and aroma. The bitterness is along the lines of a Prima Pils, lasting long into the finish. There's a metallic sheen to the sharp bitterness, which is really the only flavor fault.

M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. Dry.

O - I enjoyed this beer and would have it again although it won't replace Troegs Sunshine Pils as a staple in my fridge.
