We have been going to the Tavern for many years. First time there since their brewery was built in what used to be some game room in the rear of the building. The brews appear to be mainline styles like a pale ale, IPA, a porter and a wheat beer. Since the tavern pre-dates the brewery, the atmosphere, food and service are pretty much what they have been for decades: good atmosphere right on the harbor, very good food and good but spotty service.

Small Tavern that now brews 4- 5 of its own beers. Small inside and somewhat dimly lit it has a wrap around bar and seating, it also has a beautiful outside upstair deck facing Lake Superior. Service was good and friendly had GF PA and IPA an both were good also had several guest taps. Did not try the food but it looked good. Worth a stop when in Grand Marais especially in the summer for the deck

Memorable up-north bar/restaurant with decent tap list (always some Surly and some other locals) and food (considering location) and as of 2015 (or earlier?) they've started brewing... Friendly staff and during the day you can hang out and stare at Lake Superior, which is kind of nice.

Visited with Mr. Julius Hodge.
The Gunflint was a pretty cool place - clearly lots of people passing through on the way in/out of the woods.
I dig the sign a lot. There is live music nightly, a huge menu, and craft taps.
The Surly keg was kicked but there were 2 offerings from Superior, 3 from Summit, 2 from Bell's, a Schell's and a few other things. Not a mindblowing selection, but around these parts, it's heaven.
The menu was diverse, crossing through many genres. Menu's like that typically feature a bunch of ok dishes that lack precision and expertise in any one area. The wild rice and chicken soup was good. The walleye fajitas were certainly a good concept but there wasn't much precision. It didnt really matter I guess - I ate the entire plate.
If you're (stuck) in Grand Marais, I think the Gun Flint is your spot. Pull up a stool.

What to do when laid over for the ferry to Isle Royale? Right or wrong, we chose to set up camp at CR Magney State Park and were lucky enough to find the Gunflint within easy driving distance. Note to fellow travelers - the Municipal Liquor Store is the only game around, we were able to score some Surly Bender, while the selection otherwise was sparse but with some options from Superior Brewing.
The bar/restaurant is settled into a nice waterfront location on Wisconsin Street. The inside is spacious and clean with a nice long bar, big windows facing the lake/harbour, and some manner of adjoined side-bar that went unexplored. Noticed the rooftop area from outside, but didn't notice the access from inside and didn't really look too hard. A comfortable place to spend some time.
Current drafts and specials were chalked above the bar. Pretty nice range, maybe 10 in total - those of interest that day were Superior Brewing Kolsch and Red, Summit Oatmeal Stout and Pale, Bell's' Two Hearted, and a few more - mostly craft centric. Surly was listed but had recently been kicked. Thirty bottles with nothing more attractive than the draft list.
The menu was expansive and covered a lot of ground...Hispanic, Asian, Italian, American - whatever. Really enjoyed the walleye fajitas as well as the wild rice soup. Both well cooked, tasty and flavorful.
Service was friendly and helpful.

I've been through this establishment several times over the years and never been disappointed. The beer selection spotlights Minnesota brews nicely, with a healthy tap and bottle selection. Micros and crafts are the word here.
The ambiance is better than pleasant, looking like I could really warm up in a place like this. For the hotter days, there is a rooftop bar with a stellar view of Lake Superior. I once watched folks throw trout back and forth to each other in a game, as part of a local festival. Odd, isn't it?
Food is quality and well beyond your typical pub fare (though the bangers and mash are quite scrumptious...). Food and drink seemed maybe a bit pricey, but that's to be expected in a far-fetched destination of this quality.

Edit: Now is a brewpub with 4 house taps. I had the Sawtooth Mountain Ale. It's a good APA. My father in law enjoyed their Belgian Pale, too. Still great guest taps.
Stopped by for a lunch a couple weeks ago. Not your typical tavern. The food is unique from gyros to navy bean soup. The beer selection is pretty good. What really caught my eye was Surly Furious and Bender on tap. They also had August Shell Deer Brand on tap. There were some of MN beers plus others like Bell's Two Hearted. They also stocked some ciders/apple brews like Peels. The food was good but a little pricey as was the beer. However, everything is a little pricey in Grand Marais. The servce gets low marks because the watiress never asked if I wanted another beer no matter how little I had left in my pint. The best feature has to be the Surly on tap.

Grand Marais is a pleasant small tourist town on the north shore of Lake Superior
in Minnesota. A lot of people from the Twin Cities visit here on the way to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and elsewhere along the lakeshore. This tavern is not a typical small town bar, but would fit well in Minneapolis or St Paul. There are 12 taps, including Summit, Surly, Sierra Nevada, and South Shore Brewing. Even the generic lager is Schell's Deer Brand(brewed in Minnesota). The bottle selection includes Pyramid Apricot, and a Belgian or two, as well as some macro crap(Corona, Mikes Hard beverages). The food is eclectic and includes several vegetarian and vegan offerings. It's a shame they didn't have burgers, though I did enjoy a hard salami sandwich on foccacia bread. All in all, it's a nice place to stop for a few beers and an inexpensive meal while in the area.

This place is a nice little gem along the north shore of Lake Superior. I have been to Grand Marais a couple times, but the last time I went was the first I had been at this place, and now I don't think I am going to stop at any other place while there. It's not the most spacious place but it's comfortable with a friendly atmosphere. The service is about what you would expect from a small town, they arn't going to break their back for you, but they are very pleasant. The beer selection is great for where they are located, a couple domestics but mainly local micros. I was very impressed to find a limited release Summit (Sacandia) which I had for my pre-meal, and I had a Superior Stout with my meal. I was really impressed with my food, I had an avacodo, bacon, and tomato sandwich that had a great mustard sauce on it. I would definitely recomend stopping here if in Grand Marais.

The Gun Flint Tavern is located right on the main strip in town next to the Ben Franklin store. A small little relaxing quaint, but cramped pub that has wood furniture tables, stools, and chairs, Northwoods decora small bar, good eclectic wholesome fresh food, good service, a view of the Lake through some windows out into the harbor bay where you can watch boats sail out and in. The beer selection is actully pretty good considering the location with a nice localized selection on-tap with Lake Superior Oatmeal and Mesabi Red, Summit EPA, and others including Guiness, which the like to boast about for some reason like its a big deal, Bass, Blue Moon, and a few rotating brews from time to time including Schell, Paulaner, Leinie's, and even at one point they had Goose Island Hexnut. Not a whole heck of alot to choose from but at least they have mostly micro stuff, the macros are in short supply at this place but available. Nice place to wrap an afternoon of driving, hiking, canoeing, whatever.
