16 oz can

Pours jet black with very dark brown head. Good head retention. Nice bold espresso and dark, dark chocolate flavors both in the aroma and taste. A little molasses too. Starts a little sweet then a drier finish. Full bodied.

Growler from the brewpub, picked up on Thursday night consumed on Friday night Jan 24th. Poured from a 32 oz flip top growler into 3 awaiting glasses. I had told my two tasting buddies about the wonderful progress that Forest and Main is making in becoming the best brewery in the Philly suburbs, now time to put this one to the test.

A - Pours pretty much jet black with a minimal head that settles down to a film of bubbles on its top.

S - Just as advertised, dominanted by rich smell of bittersweet chocolate and dark fruits, cherry and others. Rich RIS smell that I frankly don't get enough of and which warrants me drinking more Russian Imperials, especially during this miserable winter season that we are all having.

T - I can't lie and say that I did not think of Kate when sipping this. I was always a Kate fan and the rich chocolate, dark roasted malts, and fruit combination reminded me of the Kate experience. It is really a wonderful beer that you can enjoy sipping or quaffing more liberally. It's wonderful and about as smooth a drink as you can get. Smooth, silky, classic RIS.

M - Only nick here is that it is not overly thick and chewy but it is scaled back a bit to 8.5ABV so this could explain that a bit. I actually enjoy the fact that they kept it reasonable and did not amp it up further. If it was a tad chewier, I think I would enjoy it just a bit more but still it is very acceptable.

O - Finally, a great stout made available at the source in the Philly suburbs. I think that this was a wonderful addition to the overly solid lineup of brews at what I believe is the best Philly burb brewery currently in play. The only way this could have been better is if I sipped it at the brewery itself in their homey bar with friends. Put Forest and Main on your radar and I am convinced that once you try this beer and their other offerings that you will make this place your destination in the Philly burbs. My trading partners are about to get a dose of this beer, back I go for more growlers to share!
