I am winding down my New Clear Out the Reefer Beers Sunday (Week 783), CANtinuing with a rather big Barleywine. The CANQuest (tm) CAN be a mutha at times, but my pacing has been pretty good today.

From the CAN: "In the Barleywine Style"; "Keep Cold [-] Drink Fresh".

I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I was rather surprised by its apparent lack of carbonation as it formed just a light dusting of wisps across the top of the beer. Hmm. Color was a gorgeous Deep-Amber/Light-Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was a sugary, toffee-flavored malt bomb! 8=O Great for the style, but less so for my burgeoning headache. It made me wonder if any hops were involved in its creation. Definitely in the English style. Mouthfeel was dense & thick, much like my thinking at this point. The taste was of caramel & toffee in a pleasant way without being cloying or super sweet. My kudos to the brewery for restraining the sweetness while maintaining the ABV. Finish was sweet, but not obnoxious. I would be more inclined to share this one if I were to return to it. YMMV.

16 oz can poured into a tulip

A- A clear brown with red highlights and a small off white head

S- Earthy, cherries, some caramel malts, some alcohol, hint of vanilla

T- Sweet cherries, earthy, some caramel, some alcohol, some dark fruits.

M- Smooth, medium body

O- Definitely in of the sweet side, hoping aging this brings flavors together and let it mellow some. I will agree there are definitely some similarities to Mad Elf

Clear, brown leather with a reddish hue and a finger of relatively short-lived light tan head. Decent lacing for the style.

Mousey aroma with carbon dioxide, a little cherry cough syrup, caramel malt, vanilla and earthy hops. It hits some of the right notes, but plays them very, very softly.

The taste is a lot bigger, but not necessarily in any better. Cherry cough syrup dominates, with some peanuts, caramel and pretty strong alcohol in the mix. Just a kiss of earthy hop bitterness beneath all that really sweet cough syrup.

The mouthfeel is full-bodied, thick and sticky, with a burst of carbonation coming through.

I’m going to sit on the rest of my cans of this for a couple years — and sort of wish they were in bottles. Some mellowing out would definitely be in order. Fans of Mad Elf may enjoy this more than I did, but in comparison to most of the better barleywines out there these days there isn’t enough depth or smoothness to keep me wanting another sip for 16 ounces.
