Smokey Pub Ale⁣

A beautiful little pub ale. We brewed this one with Maris Otter, some crystal malt, and a touch of German smoked barley. It was gently hopped with Fuggles and Grungeist and fermented with our favourite London ale yeast.

16oz can purchased from the fridge directly from the brewery as part of a mixed 4-pack for $20. This beer was released on instagram on October 4, 2022, so it's just over a year old.

Look: Nice clear copperish almost amber color. It had a nice two-fingered tan-colored head upon pouring that since dissipated to a thin layer. There is a steady stream of small bubbles rising up the glass. Soft haziness after pouring the bottom of the can.

Smell: It has a nice toasted grain type of maltiness with some caramel notes along with some spicy, earthy hop notes. I am getting a touch of fruitiness (like dried fruits almost - I'm thinking orange flavored cranberries) and I honestly cannot detect any smoke on the nose. It smells nice.

Taste: Yum. The smoke definitely comes though on the palate even though I couldn't detect it on the nose. This is very drinkable. Up front, it's initially pretty light on the palate (almost a bit watery) but then the flavor and mouthfeel picks up. The beer has a malty backbone with some dark bread and caramel notes. There is also a nice balance of hoppiness with the interesting Grungeist and Fuggles hops - it's a bit spicy, peppery, and earthy. The smoked malt tastes nicely integrated into this recipe and it adds an interesting, fun component. There is a subtle smokey aftertaste that adds a bit of chewiness. The bitterness nicely balances the maltiness with nice orange peel notes and it's very enjoyable.

Feel: Overall, it's a bit lighter than medium bodied. It is clean and drinkable with a subtle chewiness.

Overall: Considering that this is a 4% ABV beer, it's very flavorful and interesting. I think that this is a pretty creative recipe and it works very well. This would be an excellent session ale. Forest & Main makes some delicious beers, especially British pub ales.

Note: My 450th beer review!

From instagram:
Suspended Thoughts has lovely notes of classic British pubs, mixed citrus marmalade on wheat toast, ethereal Whoppers, the tip of your marshmallow stick, and nice beery beer flavors.⁣⁣

NO can date
Pours a frothy foamy off-white 1.5 finger head with moderate retention, fair messy lacing, semi hazy med orange color

Nose brings some smoke, a bit of campfire but more like smoked meat and cheese, little sweet toasted reddish malt,

Taste brings more smoke up front, again the smoked meat or cheese mostly, a little campfire but not harsh smoke, a bit of sweet malt, toasted malt with sweet bread crust, touch of caramelized sugar note, hops kick in with med bitterness, a bit spicy and rindy, touch of fruity esters, drier finish with a big spicy hop bitterness that dominates quite a bit

Mouth is med bod, higher frothy carb

Overall better, not great, but better... smoke is actually about where it should be, nicely smoke with some base malt and sweet malt characters in general, hops ramp way too much on the finish again though unfortunately, but otherwise it's actually not bad
