16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single from a local bar/bottle shop for $5.25. No canned on date and I can't find any information online about when this was released. I would say that it is at least 5 months old, perhaps more.
Look: It's super pale, not what I was expecting. It's like a straw gold color with a very faint haze and a fluffy and rocky off-white finger of head that gradually reduced to a thin layer. Looks good.
Smell: It has a nice dankness to it, along with nice citrus notes - lemony, grapefruity with lots of rind and pith. There's also a bit of a spicy and woody note coming through on the back end. Some green bell pepper on the finish after swirling the glass. There's also this really interesting fruity candy flavor that is trying to come through, but it's hard to pinpoint what it is. It kind of reminds me of a watermelon jolly rancher. A bit of minerality on the nose too (I thought that I caught a whiff of celery). I am really enjoying just smelling this beer. Smells yummy.
Taste: This is really delicious. Super drinkable also. The flavors follow the aromas pretty well. Up front, it has a very light, crackery malt bill so the experience here is almost all hops. And the hops certainly do shine. The finish is moderately to significantly bitter with tons of grapefruit and lemon pith and seeds lingering on the palate along with some peppery notes. It has a nice mouth-drying effect to make you want to drink more. As I consume more of this, I am getting really cool cucumber notes on the finish that are evolving to honeydew notes as the lingering bitterness slowly subsides. This is simply lovely.
Feel: It's pretty light-bodied, I would say halfway between light and medium bodied. The beer definitely feels like it has some weight to it after it leaves the palate but the flavors linger on for so long. Nice chewiness on the palate after the liquid has been swallowed. Appropriately carbonated, gives a nice softness on the palate.
Overall: I'm a big fan of this. Honestly, I would not have thought to create a beer combining Citra and Chinook. And how many brewers are using Citra to make a West Coast Style IPA? I have had a few double IPAs in the West Coast Style (Lagunitas Super Cluster comes to mind), but I don't think that I have ever had a regular West Coast IPA with Citra. Pretty brilliant. This is such a thoughtful beer. The flavors here are so crisp and clean and fresh, with a pleasant softness, even though this beer has been in my fridge for a while. It certainly helps that it has been kept cold. Forest & Main does so many different beer styles well. In my relatively inexperienced experience of F & M, I would say that what they do best is 1) English Pub Ales; 2) Saisons; 3) Lagers; and 4) West Coast Style IPAs. I have no doubt that they do a good job brewing hazy IPAs, stouts, Baltic porters, DIPAs, and barleywines also. I have thoroughly enjoyed every Forest & Main beer that I have had. Kudos to these guys!
