Fair Winds - 4% Mild.

We brewed this Pale Oat Mild with Maris Otter, Golden Naked Oats, Flaked Oats, and Brown Malt. It was hopped lovingly with East Kent Goldings. We for sure get hyped about Milds in the month of March, but everybody knows that once Summer is over, it’s prime Pale Oat Mild drinking time.

This one has that classic British moreishness, with a lovely tea and biscuit like malt character, that is simultaneously full and dry, a delicate hop note of orange marmalade on toast, and a soft fermentation character like some homemade pear butter. Great on draft or in the can; but particularly shines as a cellar temp hand pulled ale.

It poured out of the pint can slightly better than an American Adjunct Lager. Basically, it's the same amber color, but it is slightly hazier, sitting in a clear glass liter mug. The off-white head is ideal, therefore it was no problem emptying the entire contents from can to vessel in one try. It's mild, but the aroma is a nicely earthy balance of malt and hops. Although it drinks as pleasantly as an English Bitter, it is just slightly hoppier, let's just say more bitter than most of them, especially during the finish. That taste transition works, positively. Without an appreciable bite from the relatively low ABV, this is a welcomed feature. Like so many other brews this company offers, it's so true to the original versions originating in Great Britain, it's remarkable. The body feel is full, without approaching heavy. Hops and malt combine to provide an earthy taste that's not too bitter, nor too sweet. OK, there's not much lacing inside the glass from this one. This brewery flat out nails the originals from across the pond, as British people themselves have attested. This is just another one. If you like the style at all, do your best to procure something from them. No disappointment is guaranteed. They must be doing something right, because they’ve recently opened a second house in Philadelphia to complement the one in Ambler PA. No this reviewer has no vested interest in the brewery, just loves the English Bitters, Brown Ales and IPAs.

on cask at the pub, in pint glass

slightly cloudy medium golden color with off-white colored head. aroma of biscuity malt and mild fruitiness. taste is similar, with a pleasant drier finish. top notch mouthfeel - very smooth between the oats and the cask conditioning.
