2014 Super Nebula was matured in Heaven Hill distilleries bourbon barrels layering characters of dark oak, vanilla, bourbon and coconut. Fresh roasted organic cocoa nibs from Ecuador and Nicaragua were added during conditioning lending notes of toffee, hazelnut, and rich Dutch cocoa.

Appearance - Although the beer blots out all semblance of light when it is contained within the glass, highlights of rich mahogany could be gleaned as I poured it. I also noticed that Super Nebula seemed pretty thick as it filled the snifter. Otherwise, there isn't much to look at as it settles; there isn't much, if any, head to speak of and the lacing is likewise absent. There is a noticeable film around the glass that replaces any lacing.

Aroma - The nose has all the makings of a solid stout from the first sniff. Freshly roasted coffee, licorice, and a bit of oak lead the way. As it opens up a little, the chocolate starts to come through in a big way. While other stouts tout a sort of bittersweet, baker's chocolate smell, this one is rich and sweet - at times even fudge-like. Outside of the initial oak aroma, the barrel isn't really noticeable.

Taste - After my first sip I am paying for that last comment about the lack of barrel. This is almost all bourbon up front before calming down into a surprising dark fruit finish. It is roasty and bitter, even a touch astringent. There is an inexplicable dead period after the initial rush of barrel, as if the flavor just falls out of the bottom of the beer, which gives it a strange watery feeling in the middle. It recovers in the back with the dark fruit and chocolate notes but doesn't really live up to the nose.

Mouthfeel - Despite the film and thickness of the appearance, this is thin and watery on the palate with a mild finish.

Closing Arguments - While Super Nebula started out very strongly, the flavor and mouthfeel left much to be desired. If the aroma would've translated to the taste, this would be a slam dunk. As it is, this is a decent beer but has some flaws.
